THE Proteas’ match against India last Saturday was always going to be the real start of South Africa’s ICC Cricket World Cup campaign on the sub-continent.

It marked the start of a period when the Proteas play 3 matches in the space of 8 days and this is followed by a potential knock-out phase of another 3 matches in the following 14 days.

In the first few weeks the Proteas were faced with the almost impossible task of trying to get some rhythm going or momentum building. They have already been in India for a month and 6 days and, even allowing for the fact that February is a short month, this is a long period of time in which to play only 4 matches.

IT IS doubtful if an uncapped player has ever dominated the Media build-up to an international cricket series as has been the case with Imran Tahir, the Pakistan born leg spinner who qualified for the Proteas on the last day of last year.

Looking ahead to the five-match MTN ODI series between the Proteas and India which starts at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Wednesday home captain Graeme Smith admitted that it had long been his dream to have an attacking spinner at his disposal but cautioned on the need to give Tahir time to settle into international cricket.

“It is something I have dreamed of throughout my captaincy,” admitted Smith. “It is also about getting to know Imran as a person and finding out how he works. That is a key factor in managing any player. I think how we manage him going forward is an important factor.
